It’s been a busy week for rumors surrounding Apple’s upcoming AirPods with cameras. Here’s a roundup of everything we’ve learned about camera-equipped AirPods Pro this week.
The fun started on Monday, when a video in a macOS 26.7 beta showing off AirPods with cameras was discovered. In the video, a person wearing AirPods Pro holds up a book and asks Siri to remember that book using Visual Intelligence.

Beyond the video, macOS 26.7 includes plenty of code references to AirPods with cameras, with more details on how they will work.
According to code viewed by 9to5Mac, Apple will use a new AccessorySensorMgrd framework to control image capture and other aspects of AirPods with cameras. In the code, Apple refers to the camera sensor as the “Kino Sensor.”
Meanwhile, a MacRumors forums user also found some details on the resolution of the AirPods Pro cameras:
The active capture mode starts with a 640×640 capture and returns a processed 1024×1024 image. That’s about 0.4 megapixels of sampled image data, and a little over 1 megapixel for the output frame.
There is also a lower-resolution passive capture mode with a 320×320 capture that can return 320×320 or 512×512 output, depending on the capture mode.
These are capture-specific resolutions, and the physical sensor’s native resolution may be larger.
The forum member also has more details on “passive mode,” which is described as “lower-resolution and supports environmental awareness.” macOS 26 outlines five possible conditions for a passive capture:
Naturally, the inclusion of the video and references in a macOS 26.7 beta quickly led to speculation that the product was imminent and could launch as soon as next month’s Apple event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra.
According to Bloomberg, however, that’s not the case. In a report on Wednesday, Mark Gurman said AirPods with cameras remain on track for a 2027 launch.
Gurman explained that there are two versions of this product in development inside Apple:
It remains unclear which version Apple ultimately plans to ship, but whatever it is, it won’t arrive until next year at the earliest.
Bloomberg’s report also once again reiterated that the AirPods Pro cameras won’t be able to take photos and videos. Instead, they are designed to “scan the surrounding environment and provide context to the Siri digital assistant and other AI tools.”
Ultimately, this week has offered a ton of new information on AirPods with cameras, including features and details on how they will work.
