Touch-screen MacBook Pro will be significantly lighter

The forthcoming new MacBook Pro is expected to bring an OLED touch-screen, but it's also now predicted to be at least a little closer to the MacBook Air's lower weight.

Every detail of the expected MacBook Pro refresh has been rumored, sometimes for years, as Apple hasn't made even a minor design change since 2022. That includes the expectation that the new MacBook Pro will be lighter, which was first reported back in 2024.

However, Bloomberg now claims that the weight difference will be significant. Reportedly, Apple has redesigned components, making them smaller and so lighter.

It's also claimed that the positioning of some components have been rearranged to make the MacBook Pro easier to carry. That's harder to imagine as the MacBook Pro is already built so that its weight is evenly distributed.

Nonetheless, any significant reduction in weight is going to be a selling point. It's not as if Apple will talk up the lightness before it does a hard sell on the OLED touchscreen, but it is important.

That won't be the case for people who chiefly leave their MacBook Pro on a desk. But if you've ever switched between a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air, you have noticed the substantial weight difference.

The current 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs 4.7 pounds while the nearest equivalent, the 15-inch MacBook Air, is 3.3 pounds.

Apple is now expected to launch the revised MacBook Pro in either late October 2026 or November 2026. That will make it just in time to still be in the MacBook Pro's 20th anniversary year.
