Ryan Reynolds’ new Apple TV spy movie is a winner, reviews here

Apple TV kicks off its big fall lineup this week with Mayday, a new Ryan Reynolds film that’s part buddy comedy, part action spy thriller. And the first reviews say the movie’s a winner.

Apple TV is best known for its shows, and has great ones airing now like Ted Lasso and sci-fi hits Dark Matter and Silo. But movies on Apple TV are on the rise too.

Joining the 15 free classic movies just added for subscribers, Apple has several high-profile original films premiering soon—and Mayday is first up.

Mayday premieres this Friday, September 4 on Apple TV (watch here).

The film stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh and hails from John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. That’s the duo behind Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and co-writers of Horrible Bosses.

Reviews for Mayday just dropped, and they’re overwhelmingly positive. Here are some excerpts:

Many reviews mention how Mayday feels like it could have—and perhaps should have—gotten a theatrical release.

The well-executed action sequences, charming humor, and Reynolds’ lead performance all add up to the kind of movie that could have been a hit summer blockbuster in years past.

In any case, Apple TV subscribers will get to stream it for free starting this week.

Apple TV is available for $14.99 per month, or you can get it discounted through the Apple One bundle.
