After a couple of years of relentlessly pushing it, Microsoft is seemingly ending its Copilot+ PC branding for Windows laptops.
Windows Central spoke with executives from Microsoft and Qualcomm about the lack of Copilot+ PC branding on the latest Surface machines. While it’s not been said explicitly, Surface CVP Brett Ostrum all-but-confirmed the end of that branding by saying:
…these are not called Copilot+ PCs. They do meet all the requirements of our previous bar for what Copilot+ devices are. We still lean into the narrative around AI on the edge and being able to have a hybrid solution out there.
Copilot+ PC branding was generally used to identify a laptop that met certain hardware requirements around AI features, particularly the NPU, which virtually every mid-high-end laptop already supports. Windows Central further points out that Nvidia’s RTX Spark push has been absent of any mention of Copilot+ PC branding.
Microsoft started using this branding back in 2024, but when the flagship feature of the Copilot+ PC, Recall, was met with backlash, the branding became little more than a hardware checkbox that consumers didn’t fully understand.
The only big question left – does this mean the Copilot Key is going away?
