Google is delivering an update to Android’s earthquake alerts system that will show more information while also expanding support to over 200 regions across the globe.
Launched in 2021, Android’s earthquake alerts system uses the sensors in Android smartphones to detect the earliest signs of an earthquake and provide a precious few seconds of warning prior to destructive impacts. While the system has had a couple of mishaps, it has also saved lives and Google says it has sent over a billion alerts.
Effective today, the Android earthquake alerts system is now live in more than 200 regions across the globe, up from 98 previously. Google specifically calls out Panama and Guatemala as new additions.
Beyond the regional expansion, Google is also updating the design of earthquake alerts. Specifically, the “Be Ready” step is going to offer more information on the location of the earthquake’s epicenter and the estimated magnitude.
We’ve built-out our Be Ready alert with new helpful guidance. In the coming months, you’ll see a map with a radius of where we’ve detected shaking, estimated earthquake magnitude, action you can take, and a button to learn more about the earthquake as information comes in.
