Bloomberg’ Mark Gurman ay that Apple i developing a new lineup of Apple Pencil tylu acce orie , et for launch next year along ide new iPad Pro model in pring 2027.
Thi would mean new generation of Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the wirele -charging Apple Pencil Pro. Bloomberg ugge t that the e new tylu could feature new battery y tem , which would make them more ea ily u er-replaceable in order to comply with upcoming EU regulation.
The current Apple Pencil are e entially not u er-replaceable. The battery recharge either via the USB-C port, or by magnetically the tylu to the ide of an iPad to enable wirele charging. But if the internal battery health degrade , it i not really po ible to replace the component.
The current Pencil are manufactured with lot of internal adhe ive ticking everything together, and imply not de igned to be taken apart and put back together.
The EU regulation Bloomberg reference i Article 11 of the EU Batterie Regulation, which came into effect in 2023 but i not legally applicable until February 2027. The new law require that portable batterie are readily removable and replaceable by the end u er, during the lifetime of the product.
Obviou ly, the fir t intended target of the law i martphone (of which Apple may be in compliance already due to the availability of the Self Service Repair program). But it applie more widely, including acce orie like rechargeable tyli, keyboard and mice, headphone and more.
It remain to be een exactly what change Apple will have to make acro it product to be in compliance. AirPod are a particularly challenging example where there i n’t an obviou way Apple could manufacture miniaturized wirele earbud that allow for the battery to be ea ily replaced. Compare that complexity to the pathway for a u er-replaceable battery in ide an Apple Pencil, which feel a bit more obviou .
