‘Tenzing’ premieres on Apple TV, starring Genden Phuntsok, Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe

The newest Apple Original Films feature, “Tenzing,” is now available to Apple TV subscribers. Watch the trailer below.

A few days ago, Apple Original Films held a limited theatrical premiere of “Tenzing,” its latest adventure film starring Genden Phuntsok, Tom Hiddleston (The Life of Chuck), and Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate).

Interestingly, “Tenzing” is the second mountain-climbing release set against an icy backdrop to debut in recent days, following the October 2 premiere of the documentary “The Last First: Winter K2.”

And although “Tenzing” is not a documentary, it is based on a true story. Here’s how Apple TV describes the film:

Based on true events, “Tenzing” chronicles the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok), a gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston), was the first to summit Mount Everest. Encouraged by his wife Dawa (Thinley Lhamo), Tenzing finds an ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe). Together, they persuade Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe) that Tenzing belongs on the British climbing team, rather than merely serving it. Where Western climbers see “Everest” as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres “Chomolungma” as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between backgrounds, classes and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust — and for Tenzing, the fulfillment of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling.

October has been a busy month for Apple TV, with premieres including “The Last First: Winter K2,” the British comedy-drama “Small Prophets,” and the John Cena-led action film “Matchbox The Movie.”

In the coming weeks, Apple TV will also premiere the second season of “Where’s Wanda?” and the thriller series “Nocturne,” along with “Heart,” a true-crime podcast centered on a haunting story.

Apple TV is available for $14.99 per month or as part of the Apple One bundle. It features hit TV shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
