PlayStation 3 emulation on Android made major strides in recent months thanks to the ARMSX3 app. However, one potential issue is that PS3 games can hog a ton of space on your Android device. Fortunately, a recent ARMSX3 update helps address this issue.

The team behind ARMSX3 recently released v1.0.6 of the emulator on GitHub, and it now supports CHD disc images. CHD (Compressed Hunks of Data) is a compression format that delivers smaller file sizes than conventional ISOs.

In fact, the ARMSX3 team claims that the Demon’s Souls ISO weighs in at 8.76GB, while the CHD version is 6.25 GB. Another example is Bleach Soul Resurrection, which went from 4GB to 1.8GB. In other words, it can cut game sizes in half in best-case scenarios.

You can therefore expect plenty of storage savings if you have just one or two PS3 games on your Android device, let alone a ton of titles. It’s also particularly handy for PS3 emulation because some games can’t be played straight from the disc and require installation to your storage first. Furthermore, emulated games have shader caches that can balloon in size. So being able to shrink game sizes in the first place is a useful option.

You could theoretically use 7-Zip or Zip files if you want to save storage space. However, you’ll need to uncompress these games if you actually want to play them, while ARMSX3 plays CHD files just fine.

Otherwise, ARMSX3 v1.0.6 also brings lighter, more reliable frame generation, fewer stutters in games that rely on the PS3’s job system, and several other smaller tweaks.
