Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked launch event is just around the corner, but more details about wireless charging speed for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 have surfaced.
A Naver post by Lanzuk claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will be capable of 20W wireless charging (via SamMobile). The information provided in the post ties that charging rate to the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8, and doesn’t seem to clearly imply the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will have the same charging rate.
That doesn’t mean the more expensive model will charge any slower. Previous leaks indicated early on that the two foldables would have 45W wired charging in addition to a larger battery. That’s a substantial upgrade over the 25W rating from the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
It’s unknown if the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will also be capable of reaching 20W over wireless charging, but it’s very much a possibility. The Galaxy Z Fold series hasn’t had an upgrade to its wireless charging rate in several generations. It’s one of a few changes it needs.
The leak also makes absolutely no mention of Qi2.2 or any other magnetic standard. It’s an upsetting, but expected outcome for Samsung’s foldables. The Galaxy 26 series brought no such change, even though Google pulled it off.
Leaks in the last few months have indicated Samsung plans to bring the “Qi2 ready” branding to its cases, leaving the magnets to accessories and not the device itself.
An upgrade to 20W wireless charging and 45W wired is still good. It’s a change Samsung needed to make in order to keep up. Every other detail will be revealed on July 22 at Galaxy Unpacked.
