I wa reminded of a cene from the movie Margin Call when the Motorola Razr Fold wa fir t announced. Jeremy Iron ’ character explained that there are three way to get ahead in bu ine . You can be fir t, be marter than everyone el e, or you can cheat.

Motorola wa n’t going to be fir t to market with a book- tyle foldable, o that wa out. I figured the company would come up with decent hardware, but I thought the only way for Motorola to have a chance would be the equivalent of cheating — cut the price o deeply that the value wa irre i tible.

A it turn out, Motorola went with door number two, delivering what I believe i the be t book- tyle foldable you can buy. However, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold i no louch, and Google’ done plenty to upgrade it third-gen foldable. I’ve u ed both, and deciding between them i tricky.

I didn’t know what to expect when I got my hand on the Motorola Razr Fold. I knew I loved Motorola’ other foldable Razr , but a king people to hell out clo e to $2,000 for a book- tyle fold i another category entirely. To my urpri e, I love it. Motorola hit all the right note to make a high-quality foldable, and it’ the one I recommend to mo t people. The de ign i plea ant enough, and I appreciate the textured back. It give me the confidence to u e the phone without a ca e, which i fanta tic becau e I can’t tand the ca e made for folding phone .

It’ not a light phone by any mean , and if you’ve held a Galaxy Z Fold 7, you’ll immediately feel all of the Razr Fold’ 243g. Still, I approve of the de ign, and the Razr Fold feel excellent in the hand. I wouldn’t typically di cu the camera on a Motorola phone thi high up in a compari on, but the Razr Fold i an exception. It triple 50MP camera etup i fanta tic, making the Razr Fold the ideal device for people who alway complain about not getting flag hip-worthy camera on expen ive folding phone .

It produce aturated image with deep contra t — exactly what I want to po t on ocial media. I get more u e out of the 3x telephoto than I thought I would, and you won’t be di appointed with it performance.

The battery i another area where Motorola pull ahead. The Razr Fold feature a ma ive 6,000mAh ilicon-carbon cell. I can ea ily get into a econd day of u e on a ingle charge. Battery life i important to me on a book- tyle fold. I hate having an expan ive (and inviting) internal di play available but not being able to u e it mo t of the time for fear of draining the battery. I don’t have that worry with the Razr Fold. I can u e the inner di play the entire day without breaking a weat. It al o feature 80W wired charging and 50W wirele charging — both ea ily be ting what Google offer on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Software i alway a mixed bag with Motorola, even though the company ha done a lightly better job with the Razr Fold. Moto i promi ing even year of oftware upgrade and upport, which i big coming from Motorola. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing what that will look like. Motorola doe n’t have a tellar track record of delivering update on time, and bi-monthly patche have lipped to tri-monthly before. Android ver ion upgrade are low to arrive, and it’ hard to quantify what extended oftware upport will mean for the Razr Fold.

Thankfully, what’ on the device right now i pretty good. Android 16 i running well, and I love how Motorola handle multita king. From any app, I can ea ily witch to a window or plit- creen view by clicking the three dot at the top of the creen. It’ ea y to pick another app to pair, and I’m on my way. Multita king i one of the advantage book- tyle foldable have to lean into to ju tify their high price , and the Razr Fold doe it be t.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip et, paired with 16GB of RAM, deliver nappy performance, and I never found my elf di appointed that Motorola didn’t opt for a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

I al o appreciate that the Razr Fold upport a tylu . It eem a hame to have an 8.1-inch internal di play only to not be able to u e it a a canva . If you’re a content creator or u e a tylu for work, the Razr Fold i your be t (and only) bet in the US.

All told, Motorola did a wonderful job with it fir t attempt, and it’ a device I find my elf con tantly going back to when I’m not te ting other phone .

De pite my love of the Razr Fold, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold i an excellent phone, and there are legitimate rea on to pick one up. I prefer that the inner di play i more land cape-dominant, giving me a little extra room for two app running ide-by- ide. The Razr Fold may not be light, but the Pixel 10 Pro Fold i a chonker, tipping the cale at 258g — and you can feel it. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold i a den e phone in the hand .

It’ not all bad new : Google’ book- tyle foldable i more durable, with an IP68 rating. How much tock you put in that rating, given all the noi e and te ting urrounding the phone at launch, i up to you, but it’ better to have it than not — e pecially if you pend a ignificant amount of time outdoor .

What really et the Pixel 10 Pro Fold apart from the Razr Fold i the oftware. A you’d expect, my Pixel i already running Android 17, and it’ a fanta tic update. Google promi e even year of oftware upport, and unlike Motorola, I have a much clearer picture of what that will look like. Not only are Google’ update more timely, but the company doe a olid job optimizing them for older hardware. The update are rarely perfect, and plenty of people experienced i ue when upgrading to Android 17, but on the whole, Google’ oftware ha been worth the price of admi ion.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’ multita king didn’t get the upgrade I hoped for. I love app bubble on Android 17, and they function a you’d expect on the cover creen. However, when unfolded, they are confined to the Bubble Bar at either the bottom left or right of the di play. It’ an annoying limitation, and one I hope Google revi it oon.

Similar to the Razr Fold, I don’t have any complaint about the Ten or G5 powering the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Performance i nappy and mooth, e pecially paired with 16GB of RAM. There’ little noticeable edge in performance between the two phone .

It may not include ilicon-carbon battery tech, but the Pixel 10 Pro Fold get the mo t from it over 5,000mAh cell — even though it 30W wired charging peed lag woefully behind. I can u e the inner di play for the entire day on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, with enough left over to get well into the next day before it’ time to recharge. I’ve fallen in love with my Pixel nap acce orie rather unexpectedly. I enjoy gripping my Pixel 10 Pro Fold with the Pixel nap ring attachment, and my Pixel nap charger till it on my de k. Full Qi2 compatibility i a benefit that more people hould appreciate.

Google may no longer dominate the camera competition with it phone , but the Pixel 10 Pro Fold till hold it own. I may prefer the image I get from the Razr Fold, and I believe it’ the better point-and- hoot device for tho e who don’t want to do much editing. However, Google’ Night Sight i formidable, and when the lighting get u pect, I know the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will deliver.

It’ worth noting that the Pixel 11 Pro Fold reveal i mo t likely right around the corner. A uch, there are ome rather enticing deal on thi year’ model. I aw Amazon Prime Day pricing dip to around $1,500, and you can pick one up on Amazon Renewed right now for ju t over $1,000, making it an attractive package. I’m ure the Razr Fold’ pricing will come down over the cour e of the year, but there will be a price gap between the two either way.

All thing con idered, I’d rather have the Motorola Razr Fold in my pocket. It’ a really well-done phone, and it check mo t of the boxe I’d want in a foldable.

That aid, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold i fanta tic. Google did a wonderful job with meaningful improvement to the battery life and oftware. Android 17 i excellent, and Google’ Material 3 Expre ive de ign i currently the be t experience on the platform — e pecially if you can pick up a Pixel 10 Pro Fold on a di count.

It’ not an ea y deci ion between the two, but Motorola pull ahead.
