iOS 27 makes one of my favorite Apple Music features even better

Last year, Apple debuted a new feature called AutoMix in Apple Music. With this year’s iOS 27, the feature is getting a big upgrade with much better transitions than before.

As a refresher, AutoMix uses artificial intelligence to create DJ-like transitions between songs in Apple Music. According to Apple, the initial version of the feature used techniques such as “time stretching and beat matching” to achieve the perfect transition.

AutoMix in iOS 26 is impressive, but it tends to use a very similar and predictable style for most transitions.

In iOS 27, Apple says AutoMix “has added a whole new layer of energy and excitement to the experience with even better transitions that feel more immersive and engaging for listeners.”

In my testing, Apple’s claims prove true. The AutoMix transitions are more seamless, less abrupt, and even more DJ-like than before. The “underwater” sound effect that AutoMix defaulted to in iOS 26 has largely been replaced by more natural transitions that blend one song into the next more smoothly.

AutoMix in iOS 27 will even remix the outro and intro of songs to perfectly align the tempo of the transitions. It will also repeat parts of the outros and intros to bridge the transition. It really is much more immersive than before.

Plus, as a nice bonus, AutoMix is also available on Apple Music for tvOS and HomePod as part of this year’s software updates.

AutoMix is controversial and very much a “love it or hate it” type of feature. Some people simply don’t like its different transition styles, and that’s ok.

Personally, however, I think the feature is really fun, especially when playing music at social events and parties.

I enjoy hearing how Apple Music transitions from one song to the next, especially when it’s between songs in very different styles. I think it adds a fun new element to the listening experience.

iOS 27 is available now to public beta users. The update will be released to everyone later this year.
