Google Maps users in the U.S. will now see the name « Lake America » instead of « Lake Ontario » for the Great Lake that straddles the New York—Ontario border.
Google said it made this change in response to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) updating the name for « Lake Ontario » to « Lake America, » following an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump last week.
Google Maps users in Canada will still see the « Lake Ontario » name only, while users outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names.
- In the U.S.: Lake America
- In Canada: Lake Ontario
- Outside of the U.S. and Canada: Lake Ontario (Lake America)
Apple Maps has yet to be updated, so it still shows the « Lake Ontario » name worldwide. When the GNIS updated the name for « Gulf of Mexico » to « Gulf of America » last year, Apple Maps began rolling out the change one day after Google Maps, so it might not be long before Apple follows suit with this « Lake America » change.
