Things 3.23 update now available with major repeating to-do improvements

Things is making repeating to-dos significantly more flexible in version 3.23, addressing two common situations: finishing a task ahead of schedule and changing its date when plans shift.

Available now, Things 3.23 gives repeating to-dos ordinary checkboxes. Users can mark one complete before its scheduled date, and Things will generate the next copy according to the existing recurrence rule. Cultured Code says this has been one of its most requested improvements.

Rescheduling now works much like it does for a regular to-do, though the options depend on how the recurrence is configured. Moving a task on a fixed schedule presents two choices: “Make Exception” moves only the current copy, while “Update Rule” changes the schedule for every future copy.

For example, moving a weekly task from Monday to Tuesday can either make this week an exception or shift the entire series to Tuesdays. If a to-do is set to repeat a certain amount of time after completion, it simply moves to the new date without presenting that choice.

Things 3.23 also makes it easier to find and manage recurring items. Searching for “Repeating” opens a dedicated list of repeating to-dos and projects alongside the upcoming copies they have generated.

Other refinements include a “Create Next Copy” command for getting an early start on repeating to-dos or projects, grey repeat icons that identify generated copies, and a refreshed setup dialog with an easier date picker. Users can also pause, resume, or stop multiple repeating to-dos at once.

Under the hood, Cultured Code says the display and editing of to-dos now use the same code across Mac and iOS.

Things 3.23 is available as a free update on the App Store for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro. It requires macOS 13.3, iOS or iPadOS 16.4, watchOS 9.1, or visionOS 26. You can find the latest versions here.

For new customers, Things is a one-time purchase sold separately on each platform: $49.99 for Mac, $9.99 for iPhone and Apple Watch, $19.99 for iPad, and $29.99 for Apple Vision Pro in the US.
